Go Chicago Daily Tribune:
History was made on Sept. 15, 1916 as the first tank rolled across the
French front's dead man's land. The Chicago Tribune had the real scoop,
Fox-style!
"Even Germans Laugh"
"According to reports trenches full of dead were left in its wake when
the occupants of trenches tried to hold their ground and did not
surrender or fly from its approach."
"Yet, destructive as the fire of the 'tanks' was, many German prisoners
began laughing when recalling the first glimpse of them, while the
British, as a result of the fact that these groteque comrades went into
the charge, are laughing and rejoicing over the day's victory. The 'tanks' have added an element of humor which put the army, through all its ranks, into a festive mood."
Don't know about you, but tanks never cease to crack me up, especially when they're pulverizing my trench buddies.
Or maybe trench warfare was sooo bad that anything counted for entertainment at that point.
